Our July Happenings begins with a message from our Exec Director Jeff Lyscczyn, who says
Summer Salutations!
July is traditionally a month known for celebration and reflection. I’ve been thinking about how we participate in the story of our community and our country. In times like these, patriotism can feel less like a declaration and more like an invitation to listen, imagine, and contribute.
That’s one of the reasons the arts matter so much. A song like “Lean on Me” reminds us that we’re responsible for one another. A painting like Norman Rockwell’s “The Problem We All Live With”challenges us to see our shared history with clearer eyes. Art doesn’t hand us answers, but it opens the door to better questions—and better conversations.
June was a full and energizing month for the Rutherford Arts Alliance. We had a blast at both the Simply Smyrna Celebration and Juneteenth, where we helped kids of all ages create their own buttons and stamped passports for the America 250 program here in Rutherford County. Those moments—kids proudly showing off their handmade buttons, families discovering our local arts community—are exemplary of the RAA mission.
July brings its own highlights. I’m especially excited for Jane Powell’s “Hallowed Ground” photography exhibit at the Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce & Visitor Center on July 8 th and Gale Stoner’s workshop, Wings and Motion: Aviation Photography Workshop, on July 18th. This workshop is a chance for photographers and aviation enthusiasts to spread their creative wings.
This month also marks an important transition : for our board. On June 30th, we express our sincere gratitude to Theresa: Alley, Lee Anne Carmack, and Sharon Kolli as their terms conclude. Their leadership and dedication have strengthened RAA in lasting ways. I also look forward to welcoming new board members and officers next month as the board completes its current round of voting.
Culture isn’t something that happens to us. It’s something we create together. Thank you for helping ensure that the arts continue to inspire, challenge, and connect us all.
Peace and Love,
Jeff
