As part of Rutherford County's America 250 celebration, the Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce & Convention and Visitors Bureau, in partnership with the Rutherford Arts Alliance and the Friends of Stones River National Battlefield, is proud to present Hallowed Ground: Reflections on Stones River National Battlefield, a temporary photography exhibition featuring the work of local photographer Jane Powell.
On display July through November 30, 2026, the exhibit explores the complexities of our shared past and the enduring legacy of Stones River National Battlefield through a collection of striking photographs that encourage visitors to reflect on the people, places and events that helped shape our nation. The exhibition also highlights the importance of preserving Rutherford County's rich history and sharing it with future generations.

"As we commemorate America's 250th anniversary, this exhibit offers a meaningful way to connect with Rutherford County's unique role in our nation's story," said Ivy Albright, Cultural and Heritage Tourism Director for the Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce & Convention and Visitors Bureau. "Through Jane Powell's photography and the collaboration of our cultural heritage partners, we're able to honor our shared history while inspiring residents and visitors to experience one of Tennessee's most significant historic sites."
Hallowed Ground marks the first collaborative exhibition of its kind hosted by the Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce & Convention and Visitors Bureau, bringing together partners from the arts, tourism, and historic preservation communities to create an experience that encourages visitors to see these nationally significant landscapes through a new lens.
The exhibition is presented through a partnership between the Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce & Convention and Visitors Bureau, Rutherford Arts Alliance, and Friends of Stones River National Battlefield, with photography courtesy of the National Park Service. Additional support was provided by South Central Bank and Middle Ground Brewing Company.
A public ribbon cutting will be held on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, from 4:00–5:00 p.m. at the Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Center, 3050 Medical Center Parkway in Murfreesboro.
The exhibit is free and open to the public during the Chamber’s regular business hours (8:00 AM - 4:30 PM Monday through Friday) through November 30, 2026.
About the Photographer
Jane Powell is a volunteer photographer at Stones River National Battlefield, where she focuses on capturing the landscape, monuments, and historic atmosphere of the park. Her photography centers on history and nature, with an emphasis on mood and emotion in the places I document. She also volunteer s with local parks in Rutherford County and as well as the Fiery Gizzard and Savage Gulf State Parks.
As a Certified Tennessee State Naturalist who’s also interested in historic preservation and land conservation, Jane focuses on the natural world around us and values the educational role of natural history in helping people better understand and appreciate the environment. She also has a deep respect for the Stones River National Cemetery and the sacrifices made by those who served our country.
Through both photography and volunteering, Jane supports and highlights the importance of protecting these landscapes for their natural beauty and historical significance. Her goal is to help people experience history and nature in a way that gives them a new perspective on both.
