Learn to create Cyanotypes with CatieBeth
In this two hour class we will discuss the various ways to create Cyanotypes* on paper (a historical photography / printmaking process) using plants and other objects with local artist, CatieBeth Thomas. She will briefly cover the history of cyanotypes and how symbols can help us process passage of time, cherished moments, or fleeting feelings. All class materials including pretreated paper (with cyanotype solution) and dried plant materials are included. Students will take home three cyanotype artworks!
*Cyanotyopes are blue and white photographic images created UV sensitive paper, exposed with the sun, and use special talismans, dried and fresh plants, and photo negatives.
What to bring: Anything meaningful you would like to print, translucent and 2D items work best (ex: a necklace, key, film negative, flowers / plants versus a 3D toy/vase/etc.). Feel free to bring florals from your own gardens!
What will be provided: pretreated cyanotype pages for printing (3 watercolor pages), local dried and pressed flowers, leaves, feathers, some textiles. All other printing supplies (clips, acrylic, cardboard, tubs for rinsing)!
Due to the use of cyanotype chemicals, adults and teens only, please.
ABOUT THE TEACHING ARTIST
CatieBeth Thomas is an interdisciplinary artist and Tennessee native working in Middle Tennessee with fibers and locally sourced materials. Her work explores themes of duality, preserving native plant life, plant sourced colors, and environmental connections using historically “craft“ mediums: weaving, quilting, natural dyeing and printmaking. She is deeply inspired by the native plants and beautiful wilderness of the Southeast US as well as her studies in Art History and Printmaking from MTSU. Her goal with each artwork is to invite the viewer to pause, be present, and appreciate the beauty that exists in nature even on the smallest scale. She also enjoys teaching others about art and volunteering with local schools and homeschool groups. She is currently teaching a monthly (free for all) art class at Linebaugh Library as well as art classes in her own studio (in Shelbyville, TN) and at local businesses in Middle Tennessee.
